Protecting Your Ring

I just stumbled across this very informative article about things that a person should do to protect and maintain their wedding ring (or any valuable ring).

They talk about things such as insurance, when to NOT wear your ring, when to NOT remove your ring, how to clean it, and how often to have a jeweler inspect/maintain it.


Oh, and while I'm on the topic...
* Despite the fact that a diamond is basically the hardest material on earth, they don't withstand impact very well at all. If dropped in a blender, they will shatter into dust.

* In emergencies, when a ring has to be quickly removed, hospital personnel can cut off:

• A gold, silver, and platinum rings in about 10 seconds.
• A stainless steel or titanium ring takes 60 seconds to cut off.
• A cobalt ring requires it to be cut TWICE (one on either side of the ring), so it takes 5 to10 minutes (unbiased sources say it is closer to 10 minutes)!
• Tungsten rings aren't cut off, they are literally cracked off with vise grips or a hammer; this can actually hurt you in the process.

So ER doctors recommend sticking with gold, silver, platinum rings, and maybe stainless steel and titanium.
